How to Honor Martin Luther King Day of Service
January 21st is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In honor of this holiday, the Heritage at Bedford Springs Blog is sharing some ways to give service to others without venturing too far from your apartment. Now is a great time to celebrate the freedoms we have in this country by giving back. We hope you enjoy your month here in Bedford, MA.
Make food for a neighbor. Do you know anyone who may need a lift in their spirits? Make them a sweet treat or even cook them dinner.
Donate used clothes. Look for services that have workers picking up your used clothes for a convenient way to get rid of clothes you no longer need and to serve someone at the same time.
Call up an old friend to talk. Is there a friend you haven’t talked to in a while? Call them up to see how they’re doing and to reconnect.
Do yard work for a neighbor. Do you notice that someone may need help with their yard work in the neighborhood? Ask politely if you can serve them, but don’t be offended if they decline.
Teach something for free. Do you have a skill or talent that could benefit someone? It might be knowing a different language, playing an instrument, or sewing. Teach a younger family member or a friend that may need it.
Write a thank you note. Find a family member, coworker, or friend who may need a pick-me-up. Let them know how much you appreciate them with a simple card. You could even include a gift card to give them an excuse to get out and treat themselves.
Pick up litter and garbage. A simple way to beautify our community is to clean up trash in the streets or at a local park. It can make a big difference and take a short amount of time.
What are your favorite ways to serve? How do you recognize the needs of others and serve in your community? Let us know in the comments. Thanks for reading! We hope you have fun serving this month.
